Cullompton
The Parish of Cullompton extends some seven miles along the valley of the
River Culm, covering nearly 8000 acres, with about 8000 inhabitants. Columtune
was probably a Saxon settlement. The Saxon word "tun" means town
or settlement. Columtune simply means the town on the Culm. In 549 AD St
Columba, an Irish Saint preached the word of god in the area and it is
highly likely that the name of St Columba has been preserved in the name
of the town - Columba's Town. (Columba is the Latin for dove).

Dartmoor
Dartmoor was designated one of the National Parks of England and Wales in
1951. It is a beautiful moorland landscape with wooded valleys and wind
swept tors. 368 square miles in area, with about 33,000 people living in
it, and where about 10 million visits are made each year. All the land
is owned by someone, and the public is able to roam freely on unenclosed,
open moorland on both foot and horseback. There are also about 600 miles
of public rights of way. Dartmoor is a rich habitat for wildlife and has
a wealth of archaeological remains.

Exeter
Exeter is an historic Cathedral and University City. It is also the County
town of Devon and is business, legal, retail, tourist and commercial centre
for the region. The city has a population of around 111,000 but serves
a 45 minute catchment of nearly half a million people. Exeter has a rich
and varied heritage of buildings and townscape. It has grown from Roman
origins and displays the benefits from long prosperity, particularly during
the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries. Despite the destruction of a quarter
of the city during the Second World War, there remains much which is worthy
of preservation and enhancement. Within the city there are 15 conservation
areas of which the Central and Riverside areas are pre-eminent. There are
over 1600 listed buildings and many more which are locally important. Exeter's
historic core has been designated as an Area of Archaeological Importance.
