The Old Custom HouseChef James Duckett took over ownership of the Old Custom House restaurant in August 2008 and has drawn on his wealth of experience in some of the finest restaurants in London and internationally to elevate the cuisine to new heights.
Occupying a tastefully renovated 17th Century building located on Barnstaple’s newly revamped Strand; the restaurant offers an inexpensive tapas style lunch menu while an à la carte dinner menu provides an authentic fine dining experience in relaxed and informal surroundings.

Using only fresh local produce wherever this is possible all of his dishes are prepared on the premises, including bread, pasta and ice cream.  James’s menus change daily to reflect availability and quality of local supplies and while the atmosphere is informal, his dishes are prepared with all of the techniques and quality of produce that you would expect in a top London restaurant – and at a fraction of the cost!

Latest News: Happy New Year: We’re taking a short break, closing on January 1st and reopening for dinner on Friday 16th January (feel free to make reservations for when we reopen at any time during the shut down period by leaving a message on our answering machine which we’ll be checking throughout this time). Our 2009 opening times are, dinners Monday through Saturday and lunches Tuesday through Saturday. If you haven’t eaten with us yet why not try us out in the New Year – for an inexpensive and informal ‘tapas style’ lunch or select from our three course dinner menu for an authentic fine dining experience? We hope to see you before long – maybe availing yourself of the special Times ‘eat out’ offer as an excuse to see what we can offer (see below). In the meantime James and Lucy, our restaurant manager, together with all of the Old Custom House team wish you all the very best in 2009.

Attention all you Times readers: We’ll be featured as one of the nation-wide list of restaurants participating in the Times/Sunday Times “Eat out” offer scheduled for launch in the Times on Saturday 3rd January. We’re offering readers who collect vouchers from these papers the opportunity of enjoying a special dinner menu at just £15.00 for two courses and £18.00 for three. Our offer is for meals pre-booked for any Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from Monday 19th January – Wednesday 29th April (excluding Easter Monday 13th April), subject to availability. There’s a special lunchtime offer available too.

Valentine’s Day Special: Saturday 14th February. Make this a memorable evening with someone special. We’ll be offering a menu that will delight so, don’t delay, book a candle lit dinner for you and the special person in your life now.

Mothering Sunday: Sunday 22nd March. If enough of you (or your Mums) are interested in going beyond the traditional carvery, we’ll be happy to lay on something different for lunch on this special day for special people. Do let us know if you’re interested and if there are sufficient expressions of interest we will be pleased to make this a memorable family occasion.

Wine tasting events and more: Following our two previous wine tasting events in 2008, we’re planning further tastings and other special occasion meals for the first part of 2009. We’ll let you have details as soon as we’ve firmed up some dates, suffice to say we’re pretty sure that we’ll be presenting at least one rather unusual wine tasting experience for you.

The Old Custom HouseDuring the summer months the Old Custom House will offer al fresco dining on the Strand pavement area and in a private courtyard to the rear of the building.  Private functions are welcome in the main restaurant (34), in the up stairs, panelled dining room (20) or in the rear courtyard (25).

Lunch 12.15 – 14.30, Tuesday to Saturday
Dinner 19.00 – last orders 22.30, Monday to Saturday
