This vibrant, friendly brasserie commands an imposing position on The Square, Barnstaple, occupying, as it does, the elegant and proud former bank chambers dating from the 19th century that lend their name to this exciting venue. An immensely warm welcome is guaranteed and the relaxed, affable manner of the staff is the first thing you notice as you are seated.
Situated on the River Taw, it comes as no surprise that the proprietors, pride themselves on offering a wonderfully varied and carefully selected seafood menu with much of the produce locally sourced. The grilled whole Megrim sole for example, is a delight and its subtle, beguiling flavours arise from being impeccably cooked and superbly presented by chefs who are clearly passionate about seafood. If mussels are your yearning, then you must try these: French style in white wine and garlic - a steaming bowl of heady aromas that entice and invite the moment they arrive.
As a starter, whole mushrooms in brandy and cream, served on a toasted bread crouton with mixed leaves and cherry tomatos are creamy, piquant and not to be missed. Or why not savour the whole chicken breast medallions? Pan fried with sweet chilli and coriander.
Chambers Brasserie is a must for the gourmand, offering superb food creatively prepared and excitingly presented made all the more complete by an extensive and imaginative wine list.
