Your Money
Funding your energy efficiency plans: Before you begin to make energy saving improvements to your home, you should always check to see what financial help is available to you. You may be eligible for a grant from the Government, funding from the energy suppliers, or your local authorities may be able to help you implement energy saving measures in your home.

Funding your energy efficiency plans

The Government
The British Government currently funds energy efficiency schemes, providing up to £2,700 to households to improve their heating and energy usage. The schemes, known as Warm Front in England, Warm Homes in Northern Ireland, Warm Deal and the Central Heating Programme in Scotland, and the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme in Wales, aim to provide any household considering energy efficiency improvements to their home with a grant of up to £2,700 to help fund renovations.

The eligibility criteria for the schemes differ between countries. While some are restricted to people claiming certain benefits, others are available to anyone over a certain age. Full details can be found on the websites listed below.

Energy Suppliers
The Government now runs a scheme called the Carbon Emission Reduction Target (CERT), which rules that energy suppliers with a certain number of UK customers are obliged to fill an annual quota for helping consumers to improve home energy efficiency.

To meet this quota, the suppliers now provide a range of offers that significantly reduce the cost of installing energy efficiency measures. What’s more, you can take up offers from any of the energy companies, regardless of who supplies your home with gas and electricity.

Visit the suppliers’ websites to see what they can do for you. As well as offering advice on energy efficiency, you can calculate your household’s carbon footprint, and discover where you can save energy.

Also, npower is now working with Comet, Argos and Homebase to encourage customers to purchase more energy efficient options when investing in new household appliances. This includes a range of laundry, refrigeration, dishwashers and lighting products, as part of a commitment to promoting the benefits of energy efficiency.

Local Authorities
Most Local Authorities provide grants and offers for residents to install certain energy efficiency measures in their home.

The simplest way to find out what’s available in terms of energy saving and renewable grants, is to visit www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/gid, which provides details of some of the grants and offers available to you based on your circumstances, type of home you live in and location. Alternatively, to speak to an adviser and find out what local grants and offers are available call 0800 512 012.

Logon to www.energysavingtrust.org.uk to fill in a home energy check report. Spend a few minutes completing the questions and you’ll receive a personalised report showing you how much energy and money you can save in your home.

Saving energy reduces carbon dioxide emissions (one of the main greenhouse gases) contributing to climate change. Find out how you can save energy, money and help prevent climate change now. If you would rather have a paper copy to complete, call 0800 512 012 and speak to your local Energy Saving Trust advice centre.
